all of the law enforcement leadership. we have several people we want to present to you this morning and take your questions. i told you yesterday that the fbi has taken charge of the investigation. special agent in charge rick delorea will speak shortly. it's important to clarify that two, and only two, explosive devices were found yesterday. other parcels -- all other parcels in the area of the blast have been examined but there are no unexplode bombs. there were no explosive devices found. over 150 people were injured yesterday in the blast. some gravely. our thoughts go out to all of those injured and killed and to their families and friends. i personally want to thank the extraordinary first responders for their just extraordinary work yesterday. every single one of them -- those who were on site and those who got to the site promptly thereafter performed beautifully, as have the area hospitals. i've been calling around to the heads of the hospitals personally to thank them as well. it's our hope that tomorrow we will

the law enforcement people did much better job than i expected. i certainly did not expect on monday as we tried to digest this terrible crime that they would have gotten the two guys responsible so quickly. it's part of the problem we have in america. can we take a moment to say isn't it good that it worked out this well, that combined law enforcement, federal, state, and local got together? instead there's this need to fight about things, some of which i say are not terribly significant. as far as the demand that he be treated as an enemy combatant. that's like, gee, let me get on television and put on a reflex that's a bit premature and also baseless. >> you look at the post-9/11 world and the things that changed in this country, some of them independently, some of them as a matter of congressional action. and i think this will raise some other questions that congress will debate, one of which will have to do with the budget and how in a time when fewer dollars are available and they're making decisions about how they should be apportioned, how

several law enforcement sources tell us that has not happened. there will abnormal statement coming from the justice department and fbi shortly to refute those reports. what we do know there is this video as michael and pete williams have been explaining of a man putting a bag down near the scene and they have a tentative id on who that person may be and they want to question and speak to that man. i do not know yet if they found that man. they may have. they may be speaking to him. as of now there is no arrest in this case and the investigation as michael and pete were just explaining, is moving forward but there is no break in the case in the sense that an arrest has been made. >> jonathan, regarding the update from law enforcement personnel, we were expecting an update at 5:00 p.m. eastern time. originally that was around 1:00 p.m. eastern time. when are we getting this update. >> that is going to be an e-mail statement, that's my guess, from the justice department or fbi, saying there is no arrest, at the 5:00 press conference later today. as

most americans think that's already the law. a few minutes ago, 90% of democrats in the senate voted for that idea. but it's not going to happen because 90% of republicans in the senate just voted against that idea. the gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill. they claimed that it would create some sort of big brother gun registry. even though the bill did the opposite. this legislation in fact outlawed any registry, plain and simple, right there in the text. but that didn't matter. and unfortunately, spreading untruths about this legislation served the purpose because those lies upset an intense minority of gun owners and that in turn intimidated a lot of senators. there were no coherent arguments as to why we wouldn't do this. it came down to politics. the worry that that vocal minority of gun owners would come after them in future elections. they worried that the gun lobby would spend a lot of money and paint them as anti-second amendment. obviously a lot of republicans had that fear but democrats had that fear

i mean, the lockdown turned boston into almost a state of martial law. in the public garden we saw the swan boats were just sitting there. they were floating in the lagoon. nobody was there. they've been a boston tradition for over 130 years. in the boston common there were more s.w.a.t. teams than people. usually, that's a place where workers and runners go by the thousands. the freedom trail, which is the red brick line that takes tourists and school children to all the historic sites in this city, connected to the american revolution, no one was walking the freedom trail. it was a very unusual day. and yet, even though people were inconvenienced, even though they were told to stay in their homes, people i talked to, brian, as the lockdown went on, they all said one thing, they didn't want the suspect to be killed when he was captured. they wanted him to be taken alive because more than anything they want answers as to why those two men did what they did to the city of boston, to the boston marathon, and to this country because people don't understand
